Mappings is the studio presentation for my Master of Fine Arts Graduation Show at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design, Auckland in January, 2010.
The French theorists, Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, based their ideas on the rhizome. As a symbol for growth through transformations on the horizontal plane, the rhizome is contrasted with the hierarchical nature of the tree. The rhizome maps our ways, paths and movements. Mapping is experimental and oriented towards the future, seeking to imagine what has not yet come into being and making connections between territories. In A Thousand Plateaus mapping is described as "an act of creation".
Multiple elements, playing the hand-crafted off the constructed, respond directly to specifics within the space. There is a sense of uncertainty and ambiguity which ensures that formations are perpetually evolving and mutating. The possible may be found amidst potentiality and contingency.
